It's been on the cards for a year now but at last John Verity and Bob Henrit return as Phoenix, the band they created in 1976 following the demise of their previous band, the hugely successful Argent.
Maintaining a link with their past, Phoenix have re-recorded three of Argent's songs including the hits Hold Your Head Up and God Gave Rock and Roll To You, plus the live favourite Liar. There is also an interesting re-recording of The Zombies' Time of the Season which was originally issued as a single on Elton John's Rocket label in the late 70s.
These days bass duties are shared. The Shadows' Mark Griffiths features on six of the tracks, also contributing some acoustic guitar. Jim Rodford re-appears for the two Argent hits, as seems only fitting as he played on the original hits. Bob Skeet (Wishbone Ash) plays on the remaining song. Ian Gibbons, who once worked alongside Rodford and Henrit in The Kinks, provides keyboards, notably some very tasteful electric piano on the Zombies' cover.
Of the other songs, Chuck-a-Boy is a highly infectious tribute to Chuck Berry, Say Why (What's Going On?) questions what we are doing to our planet and Too Hot (to Hug) reminds us of those hot Summer nights that we never seem to experience nowadays.
Finally, there is a very fine version of the old classic Stay With Me Baby. Many artists have covered this song over the years but few can claim to have come near to bettering the version by John Verity. Over the years he has virtually made this song his own and he sings it so well that it fully deserves another outing on CD, both here and as the chosen single.
